DARPA Robotics Challenge targeted disaster response, not combat
A clearly dated 2015 landmark: DARPA tested human-supervised robots in simulated disaster-response scenarios, not military operations.
DARPA framed its Robotics Challenge around dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments and assistance in future disasters. Its March 5, 2015 announcement described the forthcoming finals and their simulated disaster-response tasks.
Defense-funded robotics research must not be confused with combat deployment. Human-robot teams, hazardous-environment navigation and tool use are legitimate research topics. This historical background is included because it provides a genuine defense-agency source without inventing an operational military humanoid.
What the evidence establishes
An official DARPA announcement describes disaster-response research and simulated tasks.
What it does not establish
A competition is not operational deployment; the source documents disaster response, not combat. This is a historical landmark, not a new 2026 event.
